The collections for the Villa Majorelle

Nearly 100 pieces of furniture, paintings and objects d'art from the collections of the École de Nancy museum are presented in the Villa Majorelle. Some of them come from the house, others have been chosen to recreate the atmosphere of an Art nouveau interior.

Since 1983, the musée de l'École de Nancy has favoured the acquisition of works from the villa. Such  is the case of the bedroom furniture, a unique set designed by Louis Majorelle, executed in light wood, with mother-of-pearl and brass inlays. Reproduced in the Maison Majorelle sales catalogues, the dining room furniture includes a buffet, two sideboards, a table and armchairs on the theme of wheat.

For other sets or pieces of furniture, identical examples were sought and found, such as the pinecone-decorated chairs - a great success of the manufacture - installed in the living room, along with the Butomées table and a Fougères plant stand.

In the stairwell, you can see a seaweed chandelier designed by Louis Majorelle in collaboration with Jacques Gruber and the Daum manufacture. Its shape and decoration are very similar to the original model in  the Villa Majorelle.

Old photographs of the Villa Majorelle, taken from the family album, show the presence of numerous decorative objects - "bibelots"-  on the furniture. Works in glass, stoneware and earthenware were identified in the collections of the École de Nancy museum so that they could be exhibited in the Villa Majorelle. Priority was given to pieces designed by Louis Majorelle and/or produced by the factories with which he collaborated: Manufacture Daum, Manufacture Keller et Guérin and Manufacture de Rambervillers as well as the Mougin brothers. The paintings are either family portraits, including a painting by Emile Friant, or were executed by Louis Majorelle or his son Jacques, some of them being present in the villa according to family memories and photographs.
